My Homemade Animal Crackers recipe is so easy that even a 16-month-old can make them! They're big, crunchy, and sweet like the store-bought animal crackers you know and love.

Course: Dessert
Cuisine: American
Servings: 25 cookies
Author: Gemma Stafford
  • 9 tablespoons (4½oz/129g) butter (at room temperature)
  • ¼ cup (2oz/57g) granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (5oz/142g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (5oz/142g) whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  1. In a large bowl, cream together the butter, sugar, and honey until well combined.

  2. Add the egg and vanilla, and beat in.

  3. Next, add the dry ingredients: the flours, baking powder and cinnamon and mix to form a dough.

  4. Wrap the dough in cling wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes. (You can use it straight away but it's a little easier to roll when it has chilled for a bit).

  5. Pre-heat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

  6. Roll half of the dough out onto a floured surface, about ¼ inch thick.

  7. Using Animal Cookie Cutters or any cookie cutters cut out the dough into shapes. Place the crackers onto prepared baking sheet.

  8. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until lightly golden brown around the edges.

  9. Let cool for 5 minutes on the baking sheets before enjoying. Stored cooled cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 7 days.
