  • 1 sheet of frozen puff pastry, thawed (about 9oz/255g)
  • 1 large egg (beaten)
  • ¾ cup (2¼oz/64g) sharp cheddar cheese (grated)
  • ½ cup (2oz/57g) cooked ham (finely chopped)
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh herbs (like sage, thyme or rosemary, optional)
  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Set aside.

  2. On a floured surface, roll the puff pastry into a 10x13-inch (25½x33cm) rectangle.

  3. Brush the surface of the pastry with the beaten egg.

  4. Sprinkle the puff pastry with the cheese, ham, and herbs (if using) and gently press or roll into the pastry. This helps the ingredients to adhere to the pastry.

  5. Working from the 13-inch (33cm) side, cut the pastry into 18 equal strips (about ¾-inch/2 cm).

  6. Twist each strip of dough and carefully place it on the prepared baking sheet.

  7. Bake for about 15 minutes, until golden brown and puffed.

  8. Let cool completely on a wire rack before serving. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
