Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C) and line an 8-inch (20-cm) square pan with parchment paper. Set aside.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, applesauce, oil, eggs, granulated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla extract.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and cloves.
Add the dry ingredients into the wet and mix until smooth. Pour the batter into your prepared pan.
Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting onto a wire rack to cool completely.
