Hi Bold Bakers!
I’ve made so many Homemade Ice Cream flavors but I thought why should humans have all the fun? While you cool down this summer, don’t forget your best friend! Now you can make Homemade Dog Ice Cream with my simple pet-friendly recipes. Watch my video recipe below and find the written recipes further below.
Most of you know my husband, Kevin, who is my producer and partner in crime for Bigger Bolder Baking. But have you met the third member of our team? Waffles is a Wheaton Terrier/Lhasa Apso mix, who we adopted from a shelter in Los Angeles called NKLA more than two years ago. Waffles, like many terriers, is full of beans and he’s definitely got a personality to match. Waffles insisted he’d be the perfect co-host for this episode and he did not disappoint.
Making doggie ice cream is really easy. It’s all based on plain yogurt and fresh ingredients that are good for dogs like bananas, strawberries and peanut butter. Every dog is different so you know what is good for them and how much they should enjoy. And each Ice Cream lasts up to 8 weeks in the freezer so your furry friends can enjoy them for a long time. I’ve made three unique flavors you can find below.
1. Strawberry & Banana Dog Ice Cream
Waffles loves bananas and combined with smooth strawberry puree, he’s in doggie heaven.
Strawberry & Banana Dog Ice Cream
Ingredients
- 10 fresh strawberries , chopped
- 1 medium , ripe banana
- 1 cups (10oz/280g) natural plain yogurt (low fat, non fat)
Instructions
- Mash the strawberries using a potato masher. You want very small pieces of fruit so your dog can swallow it easily.
- Add in the banana and continue to mash, almost to puree
- Stir in the yogurt and mix all ingredients until well-combined.
- Pour the mixture into freezer safe air-tight containers and then freeze for a minimum of 4 hours but preferably overnight. Ice cube trays are good to make small portions.
- Take treating your dog a step further by turning it into an ice cream sundae party!
- Keep the Ice Cream in the freezer for 8 weeks.
- * If you want the ice cream to be scoopable use Greek/Strained yogurt.
2. Oatmeal & Cinnamon Dog Ice Cream
Cinnamon is really beneficial for dogs. It warms their bones during winter and it’s good for dogs with arthritis. I don’t know about your dog but Waffles loves cooked Oatmeal so this is a dream combination for doggies.
Oatmeal & Cinnamon Dog Ice Cream
Ingredients
- 1 small , ripe banana
- ¾ cup (6oz/ 180g) cooked oatmeal
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 cup (10oz/280g) natural plain yogurt ( low fat, non fat)
Instructions
- Mash the banana well with a fork until smooth.
- Stir in the cooked oatmeal and cinnamon. The oats have to be cooked for the dog to digest them.
- Stir in the yogurt and mix all ingredients until well-combined.
- Pour the mixture into freezer safe air-tight containers and then freeze for a minimum of 4 hours but preferably overnight.
- Keep the Ice Cream in the freezer for 8 weeks.
3. Peanut Butter & Jelly Dog Ice Cream
Dogs LOVE, LOVE, LOVE peanut butter! And the Vitamin H in Peanut Butter helps a lot in keeping your dog’s coat shiny and their skin healthy.
Peanut Butter & Jelly Dog Ice Cream
Ingredients
- 1 small , ripe banana
- ½ cup (4oz/120g) peanut butter (unsalted and smooth)
- 1 cups (10oz/280g) natural plain yogurt ( low fat, non fat)
- 5 strawberries , pureed
Instructions
- Mash the banana well with a fork until smooth and no lumps. Stir in the peanut butter, followed by the yogurt.
- Mix all ingredients until well-combined.
- Puree the strawberries (or mash them with a potatoes masher) and fold them into peanut butter mix to create a swirl.
- Pour the mixture into freezer safe air-tight containers and then freeze for a minimum of 4 hours but preferably overnight.
- Keep the Ice Cream in the freezer for 8 weeks.

Also, I haven’t forgotten about cats. The Strawberry & Banana Ice Cream is safe for cats though they shouldn’t eat the cinnamon or oatmeal flavors.

Gemma – how much of ice-cream do you give a dog at a time – I am scared to overdo it –
I love this video and I wondering can you make a video of everything peanut butter dog ice cream? Like peanut butter & Carrots, Bannanas, Coconut, and just peanut butter because my dog is coming up and I want to make it and can I used all types of jelly for the peanut butter & Jelly ice cream?
I just tried the cinnamon oatmeal recipe and when I took it out of the freezer after about 14hrs, it was hard as a rock. My microwave has an ice cream soften mode. I had to run that twice and even though I was able to run my ice cream scoop through it after, the texture was very weird. I just ran the remaining mixture through the blender (just pulsed a few times) and put it back in the freezer. I’ll report back. 2 stars because Waffles is adorable. ;p
