Hi Bold Bakers!
WHY YOU’LL LOVE THIS RECIPE: With our Healthy 10-Minute Chocolate Frozen Yogurt Recipe, you’ll be spooning up addictive, rich, tangy, deeply chocolatey frozen yogurt that’s far better for you than a scoop from the typical fro-yo shop. This recipe is perfect for lazy summer days because it has just five ingredients and a 10-minute prep time!
- No refined sugar: This recipe uses agave syrup, which is naturally derived from the agave plant and isn’t as processed as granulated sugar. You can use less agave than sugar to get the desired level of sweetness in the yogurt because agave is naturally sweeter. Additionally, agave has small amounts of vitamins and minerals and prebiotic fiber.
- Easy to customize: Use a dairy-free yogurt if you’re avoiding milk or simply want a vegan option. To boost the yogurt’s flavor and antioxidant content, stir in berries, cut-up fruit, or a swirl of fruit purée. Or add variety by adding a teaspoon of cinnamon or some chopped-up fresh mint.

Key Ingredients and Why
Full-fat plain Greek yogurt
- Greek yogurt gives this frozen yogurt a lovely tanginess.
- Greek yogurt is strained, which makes it wonderfully thick. It makes this Chocolate Frozen Yogurt very creamy and rich.
- Using full-fat yogurt not only gives the yogurt deeper flavor, but the fat keeps the mixture from becoming icy and helps to keep the mixture stable.
- Greek yogurt is higher in protein and lower in sugar compared to regular yogurt.
Cocoa powder
- Cocoa powder gives the frozen yogurt an intense chocolate taste.
- Additionally, cocoa powder provides deep flavor without added sugar.
- The uniform texture of cocoa powder adds to the yogurt’s silkiness.
- Cocoa powder is nutritious! It’s rich in antioxidants, anti-inflammatory polyphenols, and contains magnesium, iron, and calcium.
Agave
- Agave sweetens the yogurt.
- This natural sweetener balances the tanginess of Greek yogurt without making the mixture too cloying.
- Agave blends seamlessly with the other ingredients in the yogurt mixture, and contributes to the smoothness of the frozen yogurt.
- Agave has a lower glycemic index than granulated sugar, so it doesn’t cause the same level of blood sugar spikes and crashes.
- Learn more about agave in our guide to sugar substitutes.
- Alternatively, you can use honey or another liquid sweetener instead of agave. Note that the end result may differ in flavor from yogurt made from the original recipe.
Salt
- Salt is crucial to temper the sweetness and enhance the flavors.
- Significantly, salt lowers the freezing point of the mixture, giving the frozen yogurt a more desirable, softer texture and inhibiting the formation of ice crystals.
Vanilla extract
- Vanilla enhances this frozen yogurt with its irresistible creamy sweet, warmly spicy floral notes.
How to Make Healthy 10-Minute Chocolate Frozen Yogurt
Prepare to make the frozen yogurt.
- Put a metal loaf pan or freezer-safe container in the freezer to chill.
Mix and churn the frozen yogurt.
- In a large bowl, whisk all ingredients together until smooth (or combine in a blender).
- Pour in the ice cream maker. Following your ice cream maker’s directions, churn the mixture until it has the consistency of soft-serve.
Freeze and serve.
- Place chocolate frozen yogurt in a chilled container. Cover and freeze for at least four hours before serving.
Gemma’s Pro Chef Tips
- This frozen yogurt uses minimal natural sweetener to let the tangy yogurt flavor shine. We don’t recommend using flavored yogurts, such as vanilla Greek yogurt.
- You can use honey or another liquid sweetener of your choice in place of agave. Keep in mind that if the sweetener has a pronounced flavor (like honey), you will be able to taste this in the frozen yogurt.
- For this recipe, either natural or Dutched cocoa powder will work.
- When the churning is done, you can quickly fold in about 1 cup of mix-ins of your choice, like chocolate chips or nuts.
- If you don’t have an ice cream maker, you can churn this by hand by placing the blended mixture in a shallow metal bowl in the freezer. Every half hour, give the mix a vigorous whisk and then return to the freezer. After three to four hours, you will have frozen yogurt.
Healthy 10-MINUTE Chocolate Frozen Yogurt Recipe Make Ahead & Storage Instructions

- ½ cup (4 fl oz/120 ml) agave
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 ½ tablespoons vanilla extract

Recipe Notes

- You can use honey or another liquid sweetener of your choice in place of agave. Keep in mind that if the sweetener has a pronounced flavor (like honey), you will be able to taste this in the frozen yogurt.
- For this recipe, either natural or Dutched cocoa powder will work.

- If you don’t have an ice cream maker, you can churn this by hand by placing the blended mixture in a shallow metal bowl in the freezer. Every half hour, give the mix a vigorous whisk and then return to the freezer. After three to four hours, you will have frozen yogurt.
Is there a replacement for agave in this recipe? Agave is not healthy at all. It was a trendy substitute for sugar about 10+ years ago until it was revealed to be far worse than regular table sugar. Agave = Nature’s high fructose corn syrup.
So happy to find frozen yogourt recipes. Thank you !
Would you kindly let me know what substitutions can be used for agave.
Thanks once again !
Cheers
