Who surprised Ina Garten with a special video for her birthday, which country is eating the most chocolate, and how a woman running late with a frying pan in hand inspired an entire holiday are just the tip of the iceberg in this first episode. Here’s everything you Knead to Know this week. Oh, and Happy Valentine’s Day!

Ina’s Not-So-Secret Admirer

Last week for Ina Garten’s birthday, popular movie star Jennifer Garner made Ina a special video compilation of clips from her #PretendCookingShow where she frequently mentions the cooking and baking star. It’s heartwarming, it’s funny, and it put a total smile on my face. And yes — vanilla does make the chocolate taste more like chocolate!

Chocolatey Good News

Can you believe that chocolate sales have risen during COVID by 3.8%? According to a recent food study, Switzerland is the leading consumer of chocolate, with its neighbors Austria and Germany close behind. Hershey is raising its prices at the end of this year, but the good news for us consumers is that they plan on introducing more zero-sugar items and organic products during 2021. Ghirardelli is also introducing a new product: high cacao chocolate chips! Thank you for keeping us warm and happy this year, chocolate.

Baking on Clubhouse

Clubhouse is an invite-only, audio-based social networking app that was created in 2020 and is already valued at one billion dollars! People use the platform to hold conversations, talks, and workshops with friends and strangers alike, sharing what they know about their industry. A baking community is growing on the app, so stay tuned for some Bigger Bolder Baking events with me and some of my best baking friends.

Happy Pancake Tuesday!

Pouring syrup on my single-serving fluffy pancakes recipe.

February 16th is Pancake Tuesday, also known as Shrove Tuesday, Fat Tuesday, and Mardi Gras. This holiday is the traditional feast day or “the last hurrah” before Lent! According to the tale, in 1445 a woman of Olney heard the shriving bell ringing while she was making pancakes, so in a hurry without thinking, she ran to church in her apron, still clutching her frying pan. Now pancake races happen in the UK and all over the world to celebrate. Have a listen to the episode to see how I celebrate!

At The Counter With Gemma (That’s Me!)

Our new Bigger Bolder Baking host, entertainment expert, and banana bread enthusiast, Mia Brabham, sat down for a conversation with me and it was absolutely lovely! She transported me back to my childhood and earliest baking memories in Ireland with Usborne cookbooks and conversations about what I grew up eating and making. I shared stories about my days working the overnight shift in kitchens around the world and my Valentine’s Day plans with Kevin and George. We also talk about the personal story behind the name of the podcast, as well as some dream guests I may have in mind (Jennifer Garner and Reese Witherspoon — call us).

Next week, we’ll be talking to Brandi Milloy! Make sure you subscribe, rate five stars, and review wherever you listen to podcasts before then!
