Hi Bold Bakers!

To mark this joyous event in true Big and Bold fashion I made this Celebration Mug Cake. It might be the most over the top, colorful, not to mention festive, Mug Cake yet. And if the Mug Cake recipe wasn’t enough, I crafted a sign covered in sprinkles just so we are all clear that this is a party in a mug. Get this recipe below!

Thanks again,

Gemma, Kevin, and Waffles

Hi Gemma! I made this mug cake and I took 1tb of flour out and replaced it with coco power. It was amazing! I topped it of with your home made ice cream and it is now one of my favourite desserts ? Although my favourite dessert list is getting a bit big ? I just wanted to say that I love all your bakes and videos and look forward to seeing how is going to win the giveaway! Xxx

      Hi Saadia,
It is so good to have you with us. I am happy that you are getting on well with the recipes too. The competition is being adjudicated by an independent person, and the results should be available next week. Stay tuned! Gemma 🙂

  3. Marietjie Swart on November 1, 2016 at 10:00 pm

Congratulations with your first million Gemma! Keep up the good work – I especially love you you help people making things from scratch without any nasty additives

We love your recipes – usually my teen daughter makes herself a mug meal for an after school snack. But I had so much fun making her a funfetti mug cake for a change – that I could not stop at making only one 🙂

The last one I made (in a glass container) have a cut up pink marshmallow on top – it was cut up in 5 and the “marshmallow leaves” were and placed on top of cake for a few seconds in the microwave and it puffed up so nice. Guess you can say it is sort of a s’more (without the chocolate but with funfetti sprinkles on top).

At the moment her own favourite mug meal is a hot chocolate cake which she created herself – a chocolate cake flavoured with spices and topped with a melted marshmallow.

    • Gemma Stafford on November 2, 2016 at 8:47 am

Wow! you guys will put me out of business! well done. This is the idea for people to realize that they can make these recipes their own. I am happy to have you with us, Gemma 🙂

  4. Nick on November 1, 2016 at 10:49 am

    Hi Gemma,

It’s me again, I’ve uploaded my picture few days ago and I was sure I entered this competition since I got my entries but seems like my picture weren’t showing here yet. Is it possible because of that I enter this using my Facebook then I changed to my personal email, maybe this caused my picture didn’t showed up?

Btw, I just made my cake with a steamer, glad I could make your delicious cake without an oven. My mom and dad loves it so much!

    • Gemma Stafford on November 2, 2016 at 8:52 am

      Hi Nick,
If you entered through the link here it will not show up here, as it is being managed by an independent adjudicator. I am sure it is entered. I am really happy to hear that you are managing the recipes, well done you 🙂

  5. Jenna on October 30, 2016 at 1:38 pm

Do we just upload the photo on this page to be entered?

  6. lidia415625 on October 29, 2016 at 1:54 pm

dear Gemma i just started this i am 12 yrs old and i have a quick question do you have to use vanilla extract sprinkles and frosting if you don’t have them please reply fast thank you. ps love your shows.

    • Gemma Stafford on October 30, 2016 at 2:56 am

No! you do this with what you have available to you, it is great to have you with us 🙂

  7. Brenda Haines on October 29, 2016 at 7:28 am

Should I be worried that my mug cake picture isn’t in your photo submission pictures? I submitted mine to Instagram weeks ago. Thanks! 🙂

    • Gemma Stafford on November 1, 2016 at 2:34 am

Hi Brenda, these are not showing up here, but going to the independent competition admin. If you followed the steps it will be there 🙂

  8. Aaron on October 26, 2016 at 12:42 pm

I’d like to ask, I made this Mug meal for the second time for a snack and it turned out a bit rubbery and didn’t have that great of a taste. I wondered if maybe I did something wrong, any suggestions?

    • Gemma Stafford on October 27, 2016 at 1:28 am

Aaron, it sounds like you over-cooked it!Microwaves cook in a particular way, vibrating the water and fat molecules to generate heat. The way the food is distributed in the bowl or cup also matters, and the material of the bowl or cup matters too! So, use a microwave friendly cup/mug, cook for 50 secs, check it, if it is firm to the touch it is done, the heat will finish distributing outside the oven to finish the cooking 🙂

  9. Nick on October 25, 2016 at 3:26 am

Hi Gemma, I really love all your recipes and videos. I think it is a good idea to representing in the video because I can feel like you talk to me and feel like we close to each other. (Sorry for my bad English.)

By the way, I really want to join this competition but I don’t have a microwave oven, so can I steam the cake using a steamer like we make Chocolate Moist Cake? I really want to enter and win the oven because your videos really make me wants to make cakes and other stuffs. I already make some other stuff too but I can’t make cakes or mug recipes coz I don’t have oven. Hope to win one!

    • Gemma Stafford on October 26, 2016 at 2:14 am

      Hi Nick,
Yes, you can enter the competition with a steamed cake, this will be fine. all of the cake type recipes can be steamed too! Do enter the competition, I am happy that you are with us, Gemma 🙂

    H Gemma,
    Hello from Canada!
I love this mug cake! I am allergic to milk and eggs so this is a great recipe for me. I was wondering if you had this recipe for a layer cake or could you let me know how much I would have to increase the ingredients for one. Thanks so much!

    • Gemma Stafford on October 25, 2016 at 3:12 am

      Hi there,
No, I do not have this recipe for a layer cake.
Do check out the egg substitute chart here, there are lots of cakes that you can bake using apple sauce, yogurt, buttermilk, depending on the recipe.
      (https://www.biggerbolderbaking.com/egg-substitutes-for-baking/). try this!
      Gemma 🙂

    • Corrie Girl on October 29, 2016 at 5:40 am

  25. Carin Booth Caldwell on October 20, 2016 at 10:48 am

I added a tablespoon of cocoa powder to make it chocolate. it was really better then I thought it would be. Will be making it again. These are perfect size for just my husband now that the kids are all grown and out of the house.

    • Gemma Stafford on October 22, 2016 at 1:45 am

Ah Carin, that is great, good job you, I love to hear that you are making these your own. Good job on getting the kids out of the house too! this is a big achievement, enjoy your freedom, lol Gemma 🙂

  26. Muhriza Salih on October 19, 2016 at 10:55 am

Hey, Gemma! I haven’t got a chance to make the celebration Mug cake yet cause I dont have a decent looking Mug to be honest.. lol! However I did make your birthday funfetti cupcakes today and the kids loved it! I couldn’t take the time to make buttercream frosting so I just settled for chocolate ganache and mini marshmallows. Yummy! Entered your competition with a photo of the cupcake but I’m not sure if my entry was valid. I didn’t complete the third step 🙁

    • Gemma Stafford on October 20, 2016 at 2:07 am

Ah, that does sound lovely. The competition is run by an external company, and if all of the steps are not followed the entry will not go through, it simply will not get through the electronic process, sorry,
      Gemma 🙂

  27. AprilHnin on October 19, 2016 at 9:53 am

I submitted my photo yesterday, but it hasn’t appeared yet, its the one with the strawberry in the middle. Thanks!

    • Gemma Stafford on October 20, 2016 at 2:11 am

I will check these out today, thank you for submitting it 🙂

How did you make the YAY in sprinkles?

    • Gemma Stafford on October 19, 2016 at 1:06 am

Yes I did, just on cardboard, with PVA glue,Effective though! 🙂

  29. Laura on October 18, 2016 at 10:40 am

Can I replace the milk with water? Thanks Gemma this is amazing but I wanna make it for my vegan friends and I don’t usually buy vegan milk…

    • Gemma Stafford on October 19, 2016 at 1:37 am

Hi Laura, I do not know how you will get any richness with this! I think it will need some milk, but try it first, and then you will know 🙂

  30. Aaron Barclay on October 17, 2016 at 1:35 pm

I’ve just seen my mug cake up on the submitted photos under the recipe, so I’m assuming his means I’m entered in the competition? This is a great time to start celebrating 1Million subscriber on YouTube. My channel is That Baking Life and I hope one day I’ll have 1 Million subscriber. With Christmas on its way, why wait let’s start partying now. Also I’d like to ask if you will have any recipe uploaded about bonfire night (guy Fawkes night) because I love the firework celebrations. Thanks Gemma!

    • Gemma Stafford on October 18, 2016 at 1:18 am

      Hi Aaron,
Thank you for your kind words. I wish you well with you channel, it is hard work!
I will upload seasonal videos as the month goes on, look back at my videos to get an idea. If you use my ideas for your channel you need to reference this, plagiarism is frowned on by Google, and YouTube, you can lose your channel this way. Gemma 🙂

      • Aaron Barclay on October 18, 2016 at 2:25 pm

        Hi again,

I’m very sorry that I didn’t correctly reference to your channel, I had done it on the Nutella Mug Dessert. Is there any information I need to include on the video in relation to your channel so it wouldn’t become a plagiarized video. Thanks for your help too. I’m nearly 15 and so far the channel has been alright but one day I’m sure and hope that it will be more of a job to keep it running. Thanks again.

        • Gemma Stafford on October 19, 2016 at 1:02 am

Hi Aaron,(info@biggerbolderbaking.com) please email Kevin with this query – he will advise you. Generally it is good so long as you never pass off another person’s work as your own. There are rules around this. Google and YouTube will take down any content, and site that they are not happy with, they have ‘spiders’ constantly crawling the web to detect duplicate content, this will not be good for you, or me! Look up the meaning of Plagiarism too, this is a learning curve for you. I wish you every success, it is all about the hard work!
          Gemma 🙂

  31. Jassandra on October 17, 2016 at 11:07 am

I have shared it with my friends

Am I entered in this contest?

    • Gemma Stafford on October 16, 2016 at 1:49 am

Hi Ameena, that is it, you are entered in the competition. good luck to you! 🙂

  36. MashalFatima on October 15, 2016 at 11:47 pm

    Hi Gemma,
I sent my celebration mug cake photo for the competition but with just one photo it’s outer look you won’t be able to know what’s inside…. So is there anyway that I can send more then one picture…. I actually covered it’s top with chocolate and almonds according to my cravings… And drizzled honey on it….. But from inside its similar to yours… but I added crushed almonds in it too…. And there is a surprise at the bottom… The bottom layer is of chocolate bounties….. So all can not be shown in just one pic….

    • Gemma Stafford on October 16, 2016 at 1:51 am

Hi Andrea, can you submit a photo of the celebration cake too! we are asking this in order to level the playing field, you can make it in your style! Thank you for being with us, Gemma 🙂

Congratulations and thank you for all the great recipes. Question, can you recommend a substitute for baking powder or a good brand? I can taste the baking powder in every recipe I make. I know it is the baking powder because it is the only common ingredient. Thanks for any suggestions.

    • Gemma Stafford on October 16, 2016 at 2:00 am

Ah! this is a blend of leavening agents, bicarbonate of soda and cream of tartar, as such a chemical mix of acid and alkaline ingredients, which react with the wet ingredients to provide the ‘rise’. Every baking powder should have the same ingredients. you can try reducing the amount you use, sometimes even up to 1/2, depending on the recipe. there is a point at which this will not be effective, but you can experiment, you seem to be sensitive to the taste! 🙂

gemma how do u pick the winners of your competition

    • Gemma Stafford on October 17, 2016 at 1:53 am

Good question, in the interest of fairness i have employed an independent person to do this job, it is important that it is done properly, Gemma 🙂

Gemma, congrats for 1 million subscribers!!! Woohoo!!! I have a question, if one wants to participate in this competition, should we submit exactly the same recipe of this mug cake (including the frosting and decoration) or can we modify a bit? For instance, instead of using funfetti sprinkles i use a normal rod-shaped sprinkle or my frosting is not pink but other color.

Congratulations!! Gamma, how exciting for you AND Kevin! I wanted to say I did make this celebration mug cake but I didn’t have the sprinkles so I shaved some semi sweet chocolate. It didn’t look as beautiful as yours, but I am sure tasted just as good!! I also didn’t do frosting, as I don’t normally.. I got to watch you on you tube… it was great!! Let me just say your baking is such a treasure for me to watch and do!! Thank you an I hope you AND Kevin much joy!! Donna
